Lucas

The screen switched as his phone vibrated, Eliza’s name replacing his Twitter feed. Lucas looked around. He waited a second, listening for any sign that Tori was on her way back to his room. She’d gone to get drinks from the vending machine.

“Hello?” he whispered as he hit the green answer button. A soft sniffling greeted him, followed by shaky breathing. “Eliza?”

“Hi.” Her voice was barely audible. In the background, he could just hear the faint sounds of loud music.

Lucas sat up against his headboard in an instant. He glanced at the blinking clock beside the bed. It was nearly one in the morning, and she was obviously still at the party.

It sounded like someone pounded on the door, and she whimpered—a sound he never wanted to hear again in his lifetime.

“Eliza, where are you?” Lucas shoved the blankets aside and stood, looking for his shoes.

“The party,” she said, clearly crying.

He grabbed the dark blue hoodie Eliza had returned to him earlier in the week and threw it on after his shoes. “I know, but where is it?”

“Green Street.”

Without thinking, he grabbed his keys, ripped open the hotel door, and stormed out to the hall. Tori stood there, keycard raised like she was about to come in. He held his phone against his chest. “I have to go. A friend is in trouble.”

“Wait,” she said, following him down the hall. “You’re just going to leave in the middle of the night? Is it Eliza?”

He whirled around, one hand pushing the button for the elevator. She crossed her arms and shifted her weight to one hip.

“I cannot do this right now,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who it is; I have to go. We’ll talk when I get back.”

“I won’t be here,” she said as he stepped into the elevator. “I gave you a choice. If you go to her, I’m leaving.”

He froze, holding the doors open. Clenching his jaw, he looked at the phone still tucked against his chest. He thought of the sweet girl sobbing somewhere at a party alone.

Lifting the phone to his ear, he took a deep breath. “I’m on my way.”

Tori shook her head. He’d deal with that later, but he knew it was over. He’d made his decision.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, pulling his arm in and pushing the button for the ground floor.

Eliza had never called him before, and after their argument, he knew she wouldn’t unless something was terribly wrong. There was no debate. He wasn’t going to leave her there.

When the elevator opened to the lobby, he ran to the parking garage and to his rented, black Land Rover. Jumping in, he started the car and took off. He hadn’t needed it since arriving because he’d walked everywhere on campus, but now he was glad he had it.

“I’m coming, Liza,” he said. “What part of Green Street?”

A soft hiccup let him know she was still there before she told him the address. “I’m sorry, Lucas.”

“No, don’t apologize.” He put her on speaker to open his map app.
